Racists in School Tell artists to change the race of a child on a mural

Posted June 11, 2010 by meredith_stern in In the News

Ok—this is insane! Someone forwarded us this article and I am stunned. I understand with the current racist anti-immigration law in Arizona, this sort of racism is not surprising. However, I will never stop being shocked at just how backwards American mainstream politics is. It’s crazy that Americans still consider ourselves the most “forward” thinking nation in the world when in the 21st century we are still censoring art because of our internalized and institutional racism. School administrators still believe that whiteness is the standard to emulate in art and media; even though we are a nation of ethnicities from all over the world and white people are the minority ethnicity when considering the world as a whole. America’s first inhabitants were Native Americans, and everyone who has immigrated here (and stolen the land) come from all over the world. We are a nation of immigrants, and yet we have one of the most restrictive immigration policies- we deny our history and rewrite it constantly. When will we stop being hypocritical, judgemental, racist, classist, and so close-minded?

Here is the Article From the New York Daily News.com:

Here is the Article From the New York Daily News.com:

“Artists who painted a mural at an elementary school in Prescott depicting four students, with the most prominent being a Hispanic boy, were asked to lighten the faces amid taunts and tensions.

R.E. Wall, the artist who heads the Prescott Downtown Mural Project, told a local newspaper passersby regularly shouted racially charged comments at his group while they were creating the mural at the Miller Valley Elementary School.

“You’re desecrating our school,” “Get the ni—- off the wall,” “Get the sp– off the wall,” were common, Wall said. “The pressure stayed up consistently,” Wall said. “We had two months of cars shouting at us.”

The mural shows students using various methods of “green” transportation, but the colors of the students have generated all the attention.

The mural flap comes amid growing tensions over Arizona’s strict new immigration law that has drawn nationwide criticism and praise.

The ranting of one city councilman seems to have revved up the controversy in the community.

“Art is in the eye of the beholder, but I say [the mural] looks like graffiti in L.A.,” Councilman Steve Blair said.

“I am not a racist individual,” Blair said on a radio show last month, “but I will tell you depicting a black guy in the middle of that mural, based upon who’s President of the United States today and based upon the history of this community, when I grew up we had four black families – who I have been very good friends with for years – to depict the biggest picture on that building as a black person, I would have to ask the question, ‘Why?’”

The “black guy” in the mural is based on a student of Mexican descent, a school official said.

According to the most recent census data, Prescott is more than 90% white, with 8.2% claiming Hispanic origin. Blacks, Asians and Native Americans compose less than 3% combined, the data show.

Blair said Wednesday diversity is a word “I can’t stand.”

“The focus doesn’t need to be on what’s different; the focus doesn’t need to be on the minority all the time,” he said.

Wall said his artists began touching up the mural earlier this week.

“They want us to lighten up the forehead and the cheeks [of the boy in the center], and make him look like he is coming into the light,” he said. The school told Wall they want the children to appear more “radiant and happy.”

The school’s principal, Jeff Lane, told the newspaper he asked the artists to “remove some shadowing that made the faces darker than they are.”

He added the negative comments over the mural have mostly ended.

“I think I only received one this past week.”

A15-minute monolog, scripted and performed by Faith Wilding in the Performance program at Womanhouse, “Waiting” condenses a woman’s entire life into a monotonous, repetitive cycle of waiting for life to begin while she is serving and maintaining the lives of others. The full text was published by Ms. Magazine in 1972, and in the Appendix of “Through the Flower” by Judy Chicago.

Zulma: I saw this video at the WACK exhibition in Washington D.C. @ the National Museum of Women in the Arts. It was the most moving video piece of Faith Wilding performing the waiting piece. I wish this was on youtube to share with you this powerful video but until then here is the Waiting poem she so beautifully performed at the original Womanhouse installation with Judy Chicago back in the 70′s.

Faith Wilding emigrated to the United States in l961 from Paraguay. She received her MFA at CalArts where she was a founding member of the Feminist Art Program. Wilding is a multi-disciplinary artist whose work addresses aspects of the somatic, psychic, and sociopolitical history of the body. Recent publications, lectures, exhibitions and performances focus on issues of cyberfeminist (women and technology) theory and practice, with particular emphasis on biotechnology. Wilding has exhibited and lectured widely in the USA and Europe. Her audio work has been commissioned and broadcast by RIAS Berlin; WDR Cologne; and National Public Radio, USA. Wilding has published in MEANING, Heresies, Ms. Magazine, The Power of Feminist Art, and other books and magazines. She is the recipient of two individual media grants from the National Endowment for the Arts.
She’s also part of the Critical Art Ensemble which I had the opportunity to learn so much about in my graduate program. I didn’t know she was part of this until now. Wow. That just makes Faith even that more amazing.

Shirin Neshat?s staggering film showed at the Walker on Friday, April 16th and Saturday April 17th to sold out audiences.

Description by Sara Saljoughi:

Women Without Men ? Neshat?s first feature film ? is an adaptation of Iranian novelist Shahrnush Parsipur?s novel by the same title. Neshat?s fascination with Parsipur?s novel and her own exploration of the literary work?s intrinsic visual qualities were evident in her Zarin Series (2005), a collection of photographs inspired by one of the novel and film?s main characters, Zarin. Women without Men hones in on the life of four women ? Zarin, Faezeh, Munis and Fakhri ? in one of the most politically tumultuous times in modern Iranian history, the 1953 CIA-backed coup against Prime Minister Mohammad Mossadegh.

Neshat?s adaptation of Parsipur?s novel manages to perform a striking interpretation of the written work?s elements of magical realism.

The film?s muted palette, which is at moments reminiscent of Kodachrome photographs, takes us away from ?realism,? something which has almost come to be expected from Iranian filmmakers, into a world that is seemingly discordant with the one we know, both in the realm of the physical and the emotive.

I’m volunteering as a Honu Guardian at Laniakea Beach. Today was my first day but it was really fun interacting with the tourists and I stayed all day since 8am just to capture this Hawaiian Green Turtle basking in the Sun.

My father, came to the United States in 1962 invited by the US Govt. at a time that all the WWII veterans returned from the war injured and male the population of the US was low. Workers were needed to perform the work of agriculture while those men returned to factory jobs. My father worked here for 30 years until one of his jobs led him to Hawaii. The Dole pineapple company. Today, he’s retired and this photo was taken last night at Sunset in Haleiwa in the North Shore of Oahu. He loves it here. He mentioned he wished all his children were with him that day. Today we’re making Mexican rice and driving it up to the beach house to celebrate my father.

I really think that this reality show is going to reveal at the end of it that Miles isn’t really obsessive compulsive and it was …

I really think that this reality show is going to reveal at the end of it that Miles isn’t really obsessive compulsive and it was all a performance and he’s just a great actor who can perform crazy and artist too. I really don’t think his work this week was that spectacular to win. I think the best piece aesthetically was actually the barbie girl, without the stupid frame she put in there. ugh. but it also reminded me of Nao’s work because of the TV in the water. Same thing with Miles winning the first episode, he used Nao’s concept to win it. Inspired by Nao’s Sans Gravite, he won the first episode. Maybe its because he’s Caucasian and a man is it that the judges find him relatable and therefore they feel as though they are connecting to his work. Maybe they see their son or nephew Miles’ eyes and this is what prompts them to believe he’s a great artist. I think they think that their choices are what the general public, the dumbed down TV viewer thinks is good art. I really think they’re making their choices based on appearances. After all, they already make choices about what is good art depending on if it “would bring some of the gallerists profits” or as one judge from the lower east side described, would make money. This word that another judge used, “Wall Power”. What the hell is that? You can’t base all your judgements on what is good art depending on how many people are attracted. That’s like saying that only Cherry pies are good art because all the flies like to lay on it. Ridiculous. This latest episode barely had Nao in it. It was almost like she was intentionally edited out. Then again, I guess they focus on only the most controversial pieces. The 3 bad and the so called, 3 good pieces.
The reason why I think Miles is a fake artist is that they allow him to speak as if he’s also the authority on art. I can’t believe Throng did not defend his work like Nao did. I guess he wanted to leave and with dignity. Maybe they were going to Eliminate Nao on the first week because it looks like this show is trying to get rid of the strongest artists firsts. This reality show is like that show where they try to reform the past girlfriends of Flava Flave. You know, the one with Monique. It thinks it can help an artist be better. Kind of like the Biggest Loser. The one who can lose the most weight wins. Therefore the fattest guy might always be the biggest loser because he has the most to lose. The point is, that the show wants to end up seeming to be “useful” to the participant. If the show is of no use, meaning, the show didn’t make you a better, person or in this case, artist, I’m afraid they’re going to let you go. When they think that this person is not going to “grow” in front of the TV audience they consider letting them go. Most of all, the reason why Trong left and not that hideous older lady is because the older lady can improve, whereas Trong already has a style. The same with Nao. I hope Nao can prove to these judges somehow that she can grow in this competition and that she is the next best artist because she is perhaps now the most experienced besides Trong who unfortunately was just let go. I loved his piece. I totally got it. I actually think he should have put What would Trong Do? instead of that conceptual artist. This would have “put himself inside the work” which is basically their excuse for saying, I know you’re not going to become a better artist from this show. You know? anyway, Work of Art is slowly becoming a disaster at this point. If Nao wasn’t on the show, I’d seriously stop watching it. I’m completely offended by the choices of the judges. Its almost like an anti-art show. losers!

Opening Reception: Saturday, June 19, 4-7pm

“In 2003, I joined thousands of other pilgrims at the Frank E. Campbell
Funeral Home at Madison Avenue and 81st Street in Manhattan to see the queen
of salsa, Celia Cruz, lie in state. The image of Celia on her post-mortem
tour burned into my mind. She was wearing all cream colored garments and had
pearl shaded nail polish and held a gold crucifix. She “slept” in a cream
colored satin interior, and bronze exterior coffin. Her hair, which was
colored in her signature golden hues, was arranged like a sleeping mermaid on
the pillow, her eyes were shut with brush of silver shadow. Her lips carried
a faint and restful smile. Celia was prepared to die and arranged much of the
tableau. In Deathbed, I continue the mediation of childhood, but attempt to
call up the precise moment at which a life is exiting the body; the surprise
and release of leaving.” – Nao Bustamante

Opening Reception: Saturday, June 19, 4-7pm

“In a decaying society, art, if it is truthful, must also reflect decay. And
unless it wants to break faith with its social function, art must show the
world as changeable.”
-Ernst Fischer

Baer Ridgway Exhibitions presents Bless This Mess, an exhibition by
artist/curator David Kasprzak. This exhibition of drawings,
photo-assemblages, sculpture, and collected ephemera illustrates the
destruction and decay of materials and ideologies. Bless This Mess examines
the role and importance of destruction in art and contemporary society as
more of a mode of transformation than a memento mori.

I felt so bad for her. She was trained in Design and was an architect. She had the most potential. But I guessed they liked the realist self-proclaimed “amature”. I feel like this TV show should be called Work of Sellable art. Or Work of Realist Art. Because these jacked up judges only go for the gold. They’re not looking for art, as one of the judges said, they’re looking for something they can sell. Wow. He sounds like a feudal lord from the days of the monarchy.

On Nao’s Facebook Wall:
Loved the show Nao. You were at the bottom 3. these guys know nothing about Contemporary Art. If what they said was true then they’d have thrown the work of John Cage out the window. You had parameters, concept, execution. Aesthetics. Loved it.

from facebook on my status

Nao was great. Straight out of a contemporary art book. I don’t think she needs a show @ the Brookyn, I think the Whitney is more appropriate! Those judges are super whacked!

Oh my god, this is awesome. oh my god. Nao and I love the New York Times. Since Nao teaches in New York and lives …

Oh my god, this is awesome. oh my god. Nao and I love the New York Times. Since Nao teaches in New York and lives in New York and I was her student in New York our dream was always to be reviewed by the New York Times. Nao’s already been mentioned but what felt really awesome is that this time they got a lot of their information off of wikipedia.
I remember trying to help Nao with her Web 2.0 launch a few years ago. I remember also confessing to her that I updated wikipedia with the fact that her brother was Nao Bustamante. She read it, turned and looked at me like I had slung shit in her face. She was furious. But Nao never says anything when she’s mad, in fact she just becomes paralized and she has so much poise. She begins to ask a lot of questions. She’s so awesome. So, I responded. Nao, Nao, for real, this is important. Believe me, I said, I know that you don’t want to make a name for yourself by mixing your name up with that of your political brother in California, but seriously, it is relevant. It is a reality that you are former Lt. Governor Cruz Bustamante’s brother. She was like, but this page is about me.. blah blah blah. I didn’t listen. I know plenty about wikipedia that even though she could have deleted it its already in the history, archived. Any random user or wikipedia admin could re-insert the contraversial fact just to make the page more popular and give it more hits. I consider myself a meta master, a hit maker for websites. I think I know the algorithm to google or something because I know that if I want attention re: something like the Women of Juarez film I made or any topic like femicide or Nao Bustamante, if I blog about it they will come. by they, I mean the spiders and robots of search engines like google and that other retarded new search engine that microsoft has made that nobody except Jay Leno cares about because he gets paid by NBC the corporate affiliate of MSNBC who is linked up with MS (MicroSoft) In any case,
yeah, Nao’s show airs tomorrow, I can’t wait. Right now on facebook Nao released the video that she used to send to Bravo TV as an audition for the program she’s mentioned in the NYT in and I’m so excited. Wow. The day before the show airs, the NYT picks up the story. I hope Nao publishes a book about her experience becoming a reality TV star. I hope she titles it that way.. becoming.. and then in smaller letters a Reality TV star underneath.
tee hee. anyway
i was having a shitty day because my dad was suffering from hypochodria and faked a near death experience just because i’ve been working my under employed position at the temp agency and well I’ve been busy. super busy. then evenings I spend with my man here every night. I barely get to see Dad. I really need to go back to church. that was our ritual. No matter what we did all week, we’d always see each other at church then we’d go for some tacos and he’d make fun of the ladies who wore too much perfume or wore bikini’s underneath their tanktops to church. This is Hawaii, the ladies tend to be very under dressed. Everybody wears flip flops even to church. its hilarious. Anyway, I’ve been living in Hawaii, officially for a year now June 8, 2010. Wow, today is my 1 year anniversary of leaving the mainland. no wonder it was a crappy day. this economy is strangling me and forcing me to live with my dad. its not easy to come back humbled and over educated. jajaja. I can barely relate to people but I’m hangin’ in there. I’m spoiled. My best friends all talked about Derrida and Karl Marx and here people don’t even know the difference between capitalism & socialism.
Its a nightmare. Hawaii is beautiful but it certainly feels like a ship of fools.
Anyway, I’m glad that Nao posted up her video or else that whiney part of this post would have gone on way longer. She’s such a breath of fresh air and the NYT writer noticed it. I loved that line too regarding how established Nao was, but then again, I also loved the line where she says, I want them to be able to hear the panty hose. jajaja
Nao in my experience is the best performance artist living. Not only is she nice, but she is so loving and kind too. She only snaps at ignorant people who claim to know about performance art but can’t even understand the theory of Nao’s best friend Jose Mu?oz the Department Chair of NYU’s Performance Art Dept. Jose should be next year’s judge, but you know what, he’s too smart to be on that show. I agree, with that NYT writer. I loved that judge he’s talking about and I also was unimpressed with Chow’s resume. I’d have to know her and listen to what she knows about art in person to truly make a judgement. I guess I’ll have to wait for the show. But yeah, to say things like the Greenberg lady only makes me remember that her last name is Greenberg, similiar to the biggest art snob in the history of contemporary art. remember Alan Greenberg? rolling eyes. Him and his Kitsch!

Oh my god, now that Nao is on that TV Show that Sarah Jessica Parker is producing, I’m like totally excited and I feel like even though I’m stuck in this BEAUTIFUL Island, I can write about Art again. By the way, the first time I saw Sarah on TV was on HBO when I lived in Calexico. I was a little Mexican American girl and I got all my fashion ideas about the 80′s and 90′s from this one movie that Sarah was in called “Girls just Wanna have fun”. I remember thinking I was her sassy wild friend. Technically it kinda stirred up the same emotions that Sex & the City now stirs up in me. The fact that they were 16 and had crushes on bad boys with cute-formerly-hic, turned James Dean look a likes with just the addition of a leather jacket was awesome. I knew from that movie that if I were to be accepted one day as a Chicana Feliz in this society that I’d have to change my style.

Jessica since became a fashion icon since then. In retrospect my little chicana teenage hormones told me she’d be awesome one day because I fell in love with her ever since. But in any case, SJP is now producing (paying for) a TV Show that my professor is in. Nao Bustamante, deserves a show @ the Brooklyn Museum next to the permanent installation of the Dinner Table. Everybody knows that real art makes people want to change their lives into an art process and not just a dreary repetition of yesterday. Nao lives her life every day like an artist. She could have the biggest deadline in the world, but if fufu needs to take a walk, she will stop the world to be with her dog. In consequence she’ll invite people on facebook out for a walk and suddenly you have a team of artist marching around downtown troy all gawking and ooing at the beauty of fufu (nao’s dog) in the middle of an urbanly decayed once industrial utopian town.

If you don’t know what I’m talking about, Nao Bustamante, my homegirl, my arts professor, my thesis advisor, the person who taught me what is an “Art Process” is on TV!

Yep, ok, ok, let me slow down and just tell you the chisme or the bochinche (see links for the translations).

A) There is a new show on TV premiering NEXT WEDNESDAY ON BRAVO TV! and its a TELEVISED ART COMPETITION!

Its the ultimate creation of the Society of the Spectacle. I bet you that’s why Nao applied to the call. Nao is a performance artist, a live artist, a video artist, a New Media Artist, a conceptual artist and she has been since she was a teenager. Nao has this photo album of all of her life experiences she once shared with me and I cried at how lovely and inspiring it was. To this day it makes me cry. Nao has lived out her every dream. She has sailed away on a boat with her husband. She has lived in a commune with other artists in Europe. She has lived in upstate NY for the past decade it seems. She’s remained close to her circle of friends all through social networking. I am in Hawaii and I still am close to Nao and know that she is one of the most loving and loved creatures at RPI! At the Art department we call her the big ball of love! If there is ever anything that you need, Nao will come to the rescue. She will stop her art process and bust out her Mexican ways and cook you an authentic organic locally grown Mexican meal just to confort you. To help you think about where you are in your art process and to talk with you in a calm quiet way over tea looking into the Hudson River with Fufu, where you should take your art next.

Nao, helped me complete the Masters in Fine Arts program through what seemed like Art Therapy. I actually think that this capitalist form of the show, meaning glorifying the individual is probably not the best thing for Nao, because that’s not how she is most efficient. Nao functions in a real society of artists. real living artists. This mass media corporate culture way of producing art has always been the problem, but not in Troy. Nao has thrived where people appreciate art for the process and the art. Believe me, Nao’s art process requires time and she makes time based media (video), however, Nao needs her own reality show. the crazy shit that happens in Troy over one year is enough footage to truly show you how calm and beautiful art making can be. Not like the high pressure, under time constraints pressure that the contestants of this show are having to perform.
I don’t know, I think that John Cage’s silent piece is one of the most amazing pieces I’ve heard in my whole lifetime. BRAVO should adress that Art has changed. They should take Maryanne’s Staniszewski’s class on What is Contemporary Art at RPI? She would say, YOU CAN ACCEPT IT OR YOU CAN REJECT IT? it is still art!

If you’re reading this because you’re sequestered from talking to us about details of the show, I want to say that you’re the best, remember that. Those guys are JUST FINE artists, you’re a LIVE artist. That makes it impossible to appreciate your work when you’re not alive. People have to take it in and love it while time wastes away. More valuable than money or materials is time! Your work is Time based art! Your process takes time and you are a master at Time Travel!

It engages people. And I think that’s what we need…[I]t really doesn’t matter what medium you decide to use. I think the objective is to engage people. But now more than ever, artists have a lot more powerful tools to play with…[A]rt does not have to be confined to a physical space, the gallery or museums, but now we have the power of the internet, when we could enter people’s homes and offices and engage them in the dialogue.
Opening reception Thursday 11 March 2010, 8-10PM LACE is proud to present Art Against Empire—Graphic Responses to U.S. Intervention Since World War II, curated by Carol A. Wells from the archives of the Center for the Study of Political Graphics (CSPG). Featuring works by Josh MacPhee, Corita Kent, Jay Belloli, Cedomic Kostovic, Stephen Kroninger, and more. Art Against Empire uses the power of posters to document 60 years of opposition to U.S. interventions into the domestic affairs of sovereign nations. Political, economic and military interventions, many of them covert, have repeatedly resulted in unacceptable deaths and misery for millions. These posters show hopes and dreams, and the pain of dreams destroyed. Art Against Empire showcases over 100 political posters in the LACE galleries, spanning two dozen sovereign nations including Korea, Vietnam, the Philippines, Guatemala, Haiti, Cuba, Iran, and South Africa. It attempts to inform, challenge and inspire by confronting the viewer with images of past struggles that remain powerfully relevant today. It both raises questions about past interventions and fosters debate about present ones. The exhibition will also provide insight into why the amount of devastation caused by the recent earthquake in Haiti can be linked to its long history of French colonialism and U.S. imperialism. The United States is the focus of this exhibition. As citizens, we are ultimately responsible for the actions that are taken by our government in our name. Censorship and repression, so prevalent in wartime, invariably attempt to eliminate dissent, thereby violating the principles on which this democracy was founded. These posters document the efforts of people who refuse to remain silent and who use the power of art to inspire action.

An endearing animation about a project some friends have been creating in Braddock, PA. I can’t say I feel the same about Braddock. The sound of the steel mill and the polluted environment are thankfully absent. Regardless the folks involved are in a category of the most dedicated and hardworking peeps I know, and they know creative folks, watch it!

Vectorial Elevation is an interactive artwork that allows participants to transform the sky over Vancouver, Canada. Using a three-dimensional interface, this web site lets you design huge light sculptures by directing 20 robotic searchlights located around English Bay. Leigh Bowery (26 March 1961 – 31 December 1994) was an Australian performance artist, club promoter, actor, pop star, model and fashion designer, based in London. Bowery is considered one of the more influential figures in the 1980s and 1990s London and New York art and fashion circles influencing a generation of artists and designers. His influence reached through the fashion, club and art worlds to impact, amongst others, Alexander McQueen, Vivienne Westwood, Boy George, Antony and the Johnsons, John Galliano, the Scissor Sisters, David LaChapelle, Lady Bunny plus numerous Nu-Rave bands and nightclubs in London and New York which arguably perpetuated his avant garde ideas.

Similar to Juarez, Sri Lanka is currently suffering from a stream of Dissapearances. Please write your govt. rep’s and try to get their attention on this. Also, don’t buy anything from Walmart that says Sri Lanka. Show the govt. you’ll spend your dollars in a moral way.

The Museum of Modern Art in NYC:? An Evening with Jim Finn

Monday, February 1, 2010, 7:00 p.m.? Theater 2 (The Roy and Niuta Titus Theater 2), T2
A brilliant and wickedly satirical mash-up of documentary, fictionalized restaging, and agitprop, Jim Finn?s The Juche Idea (2008) takes as its inspiration and its target the film theories and principles of self-reliance espoused by North Korean dictator Kim Jong-Il. Absolutist in the extreme, the Dear Leader?s moviemaking edicts were designed to uphold the ?monolithic ideology of the Party.? Finn subjects them to withering parody through genre-defying experimental conceits, incorporating scenes from North Korean melodramas and propaganda films dating back to the 1950s, allusions to the 1978 kidnapping of the late South Korean filmmaker Shin Sang-ok, and absurdist reenactments of English-language lessons from official textbooks. Robert Koehler in Variety writes, ?The evidence that current film-making is brimming with original, standard-breaking creations has to include the work of Jim Finn?. To say that [his] films open up new possibilities for satire, ideas, and language isn?t an overstatement.? Finn also presents his recent short films, Dick Cheney in a Cold, Dark Cell (2009) and selections from la loteria (2004?05).

Tony Quan, aka Tempt1, is a legendary LA graffiti writer, publisher and activist. He was diagnosed with ALS in 2003, a disease which has left him almost completely physically paralyzed… except for his eyes. Earlier this year, members of FAT, OpenFrameworks, G.R.L., The Ebeling Group and Tempt1, teamed up to create a low-cost, open source eye-tracking system that will allow ALS patients to draw using just their eyes. Check out the project along with source code, free software, diy instructables and eyetags by Tempt1 at eyewriter.org.

By jo on writings

“Abstract: This article examines the racialization of informational labor in machinima about Chinese player workers in the massively multiplayer online role playing game World of Warcraft. Such fan-produced video content extends the representational space of the game and produces overtly racist narrative space to attach to a narrative that, while carefully avoiding explicit references to racism or racial conflict in our world, is premised upon a racial war in an imaginary world — the World of Azeroth. This profiling activity is part of a larger biometric turn initiated by digital culture’s informationalization of the body and illustrates the problematics of informationalized capitalism. If late capitalism is characterized by the requirement for subjects to be possessive individuals, to make claims to citizenship based on ownership of property, then player workers are unnatural subjects in that they are unable to obtain avatarial self-possession. The painful paradox of this dynamic lies in the ways that it mirrors the dispossession of information workers in the Fourth Worlds engendered by ongoing processes of globalization. As long as Asian “farmers” are figured as unwanted guest workers within the culture of MMOs, user-produced extensions of MMO-space like machinima will most likely continue to depict Asian culture as threatening to the beauty and desirability of shared virtual space in the World of Warcraft.” Don’t Hate the Player, Hate the Game: The Racialization of Labor in World of Warcraft, Lisa Nakamura, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.
From the audio labs of Ultra-Red comes the fourth and final volume in their Sounds of the War on the Poor series. Beginning in 2008, activists and artists were invited to create one-minute sound responses to the question: What is the sound of the war on the poor? The contributions include micro-documentaries, soundscapes, music interventions, interviews … all available for free download.

Ultra-red is an interesting crew. Positioning themselves as an artist collective who engage in the “fragile dynamic between audio art and political mobilizing”, ultra-red is pushing the boundaries between the aesthetic and the political in the realm of sound art.

Not content with making and distributing recordings with political implications, ultra-red also engages in political intervention in the course of their collaborative work. Some of their previous work includes: Soundtrax, their first public intervention created in collaboration with the Los Angeles clean needle exchange, Clean Needles Now; Secondnature: an investigation into queer public sex in Los Angeles’ Griffith Park; Survey the Future: reflections on the struggle of migrants in the context of, respectively, global capital and labor – to name just a few.

Sounds of the War on the Poor are part of their public record archives, which also includes series on AIDS, questions of global migration, and public housing. All recordings are available for free download.
